I think I've read them all. Here's the dark 4 sheep. This one came out of left field. I 3 was surprised at how good it is.

The other 2 books are great. But for actually learning the language, I 1 think this one wins hands down.

ppk on JavaScript was really great. His website is also filled with 2 tons of useful information including lots 1 on browser incompatibilities.

After you've tried out some of the books, read 11 them through, make sure you try many things 10 and ideas out on your own. The only way 9 to really learn a language is to write programs 8 in it. After you have a good understanding, answer 7 some questions on SO. This can really help 6 you learn stuff and have fun talking code 5 with other people. An SO technique I use 4 is to find a user with 20k + rep who has 3 a lot of posts in the javascript tag, then 2 look at some of their most upvoted javascript 1 answers. Good luck! :D

i would recommend "Head First JavaScript" it is nice 2 to read, with good illustrations. I love 1 the books from this publisher.

I'd recommend Pro JavaScript Techniques: The Ultimate JavaScript book for the modern Web Developer by By John Resig, the author 1 of jQuery framework.
